Equipment

Equipment and specific aids are available to help you if you have difficulties carrying out daily living activities. Such as washing, dressing to larger needs such as getting out of the back door or up the stairs.

An occupational therapist is the person who can assess you and often provide or advise you which are the best equipment or aid for you, many pieces of equipment you probably don’t even no exist. They can also arrange home adaptations and work place adaptations for you. You can ask to be reefed to an occupational therapist by seeing your GP or PDNS.

If you are struggling to afford to purchase equipment contact the Parkinson’s disease society, see links page, as various grants are available to help with such purchases

Southampton’s new Joint Equipment Store

The Josian Centre, Southampton city’s new health and social care equipment provision centre for people with disabilities, officially opened in November 2006.

The centre is now the new base for many of Southampton’s current health equipment services including the Wheelchair Service, the Continence Advisory Service, the Aid and Equipment Centre, and the Joint Equipment Store. These services have moved from their current bases to the new centre in Empress Road, under a mile from the Royal South Hants Hospital site.

As well as these PCT services, a number of other partner services are based at this site including; the Hampshire Deaf Association, British Red Cross, and Southampton City Council Meals on Wheels service.

By centralising this facility we have given patients a single point of contact for all disability functions, meaning work can be planned effectively and efficiently.  Patients were previously advised to go to a variety of venues for different aspects of their care -;wheelchairs at Ashurst, equipment at the Royal South Hants or the Western hospital, sensory impairment at Hampshire Deaf Association or Social Services in Archer’s Road, continence to Hythe etc. The Josian Centre has brought all services together under one roof to improve access for patients and give a more effective service.

Chris Webb, Specialist and Clinical Equipment Services Manager said “The Josian Centre now offers patients a ‘’one-stop centre’’ for disability services which includes:

  • advice and information
  • regular booked out-patient clinics and “drop-in” facilities.
  • assessment of clients’ condition
  • links to medical diagnoses as appropriate
  • provision of equipment from Social Services or Health Services
  • reviews and reassessments of client’s needs and equipment provision
  • links to other specialist services and primary/secondary care services
  • availability of purchasing non-assessed equipment from voluntary organisations within the same facility.”
