How is Parkinson's diagnosed?

Parkinson’s normally develops gradually and it can be months or years before the symptoms become obvious to make you visit a doctor or seek advice.

In 2006 the National Clinical Institute of Clinical Excellence  (NICE) created  guideline for Parkinson's disease and this outlines how it is diagnosed.

People with suspected Parkinson's should be referred quickly (within 6 weeks) and untreated to a specialist of the condition.

The diagnosis should be reviewed regularly (every 6-12 months).

It is not easy to diagnose Parkinson's, at present  there are no special x-rays or blood tests that can confirm the diagnosis. Some tests may be used to rule out other conditions such as strokes.

Diagnosis is based upon on thorough  medical history and a clinical examination of the person.
