The “Increasing your awareness of Parkinson’s Disease Workshop”, may be for you.

This workshop is run by Vicky Queen. Parkinson’s Disease Nurse Specialist and she is aiming to run at least two of them a year, although if you work in a residential/nursing home it may be worth asking Vicky if she could do a workshop for you and your colleagues at your place of work.

Towards an Understanding of Parkinson’s Disease Seminar

Aims of this workshop:

·        To begin to understand what Parkinson’s disease is.

·        To understand how Parkinson’s disease affects individuals and their families.

·        To have a greater understanding of the needs of people with Parkinson’s disease.

·        To understand some of the symptoms and problems that can occur as a result of Parkinson’s disease.

·        To know more about resources available to help and support you in caring for people with Parkinson’s disease.

Friday 12th September 2008 Towards and Understanding of Parkinson’s disease. Venue: Grove Medical Practice, Grove Road, Shirley, Southampton.
 
This is a morning seminar aimed at those who would like to learn more about Parkinson’s disease, starting with the definition of Parkinson’s disease, the signs and symptoms and the needs of people with Parkinson’s disease.
 
This seminar is provided by Vicky Queen, Parkinson’s Disease Nurse Specialist and Kate King, Parkinson’s Disease Society Education Officer for Southern England. All places must be booked by 1st June 2008 and there is a cost of £20 per person, this includes refreshments before the seminar and during the coffee break, Resources and References to take away and a Certificate of attendance. All money is donated to the Parkinson’s disease Society.

The Southampton City Parkinson’s Disease Network

Interest Group.

 

The interest group runs a bi-monthly meeting for rehab team staff in Southampton to provide updates in recent advances in Parkinson’s disease and a chance for therapists to network with others working with people with Parkinson’s disease. The Southampton City Parkinson’s Disease Network Meeting

This is a newly created meeting, supported by this website to ensure services in Southampton are focused towards the actual needs of people with Parkinson’s disease and their families.

The meeting will be attended by professionals working in the trust such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurses along with people with Parkinson’s disease and their family members. The meeting will discuss how helpful interventions are such as physiotherapy at home, the community Parkinson’s clinics, etc…. The Southampton City Parkinson’s Disease Network Update

Friday 7th November 2008 Multi-disciplinary Team Parkinson’s disease Update.
Venue: to Be Confirmed, (Southampton area).
 
This is a half day, update aimed at MDT staff who work with patients with Parkinson’s disease in the community. It aims to update attendee’s knowledge and focuses upon newly diagnosed services, the use of Apo Morphine, Voice therapy and a case study in Parkinson’s disease and back care. The full programme will be released in Spring 2008.
 
This update is provided and coordinated by Vicky Queen, Parkinson’s disease nurse specialist and local health and social care professionals, along with Medical Representatives.  All places must be booked by 1st August 2008 and there is no cost for attendance, but donations to the Parkinson’s disease Society on the day would be welcomed.

Parkinson’s Disease Seminars and Education session, provided by Kate King, Education officer for the Parkinson’s disease society in Southampton.

These exciting seminars and education sessions range from 3hours to one day and have a certificate of attendance when you finish one of the sessions. These are aims at nurses, carers, cleaning staff and anyone looking after people with Parkinson’s. In 2008 Vicky Queen, PDNS is planning with Kate King to run a programme of these seminars in local hospitals. If you would like to arrange for Kate King to run one of these sessions in your care or nursing home you can contact her by looking on the contact us page.

 

Tuesday 8th April (morning), Wednesday 9th April (afternoon) and Thursday 12th April (morning):When your Patient Has Parkinson’s Disease: The Challenges of Parkinson’s disease in the Hospital Setting.Venue: Southampton General Hospital.

A two-hour education session designed to give all levels of ward and other hospital staff, an improved understanding of the challenges of supporting a patient with Parkinson's during their stay in hospital. The seminar consists of direct teaching and videos, plus a range of support literature. The cost of this seminar is at a reduced cost for Parkinson’s disease awareness week of £10 per person. All places need to be booked by Friday 4th April 2007, all money raised from this seminar will be donated to the Parkinson’s disease society and a certificate of attendance will be given to all who attend. Morning seminars will run from 10am-12midday and afternoon seminars from 2pm-4pm.
